We mourn the lives of ten Japanese citizens who were lost as a result of the recent ferry hijacking attack off the coast of Busan.
The last few days have been incredibly difficult for the Japanese people. This terrible act of aggression was a threat not only to Japan but to global peace, security, and international norms surrounding safe naval passage for civilians.
As the Prime Minister of Japan, I would like to express my deep condolences for all victims of this horrific act. We must stand up with firm resolve to acts of violence, together with other nations of the world. In honor of the ten Japanese citizens whose lives were lost, I would like to call for a national day of mourning on January 7, as well as a state funeral held in Tokyo. We extend our deepest condolences to the friends and families of those who were lost.
We also mourn our South Korean brother who was lost during the rescue attempt. We are deeply grateful to the Republic of Korea for their collaboration and support throughout this challenging time. We are also grateful to those around the world who expressed their deep sympathy, to all those who share our sadness and pain, as well as strong anger toward this attack.
